As três preposições que mais confundem em inglês são in, on e at, e para tempo e lugar elas seguem uma escala: in para o maior e mais geral (meses, anos, cidades, países), on para dias e superfícies, e at para o ponto exato (horas, endereços, lugares específicos).
Prepositions of Time and Place
In, on ou at: qual preposição usar?
In, On, At e outras preposições essenciais.
No tempo: in July, in 2025, in the morning; on Monday, on my birthday, on June 3rd; at 7 o'clock, at noon, at night, at the weekend (no inglês britânico — no americano é on the weekend). Antes de next, last, this e every, não vai preposição nenhuma: "I'll see you next week".
No lugar: in para dentro de um espaço (in the room, in Brazil, in the car), on para superfície e linha (on the table, on the wall, on the bus, on the second floor) e at para um ponto ou um lugar pela sua função (at the door, at work, at school, at the airport). Ônibus, trem e avião são "on"; carro e táxi, "in".
Movimento usa outras preposições: to indica destino ("I'm going to the bank"), into é entrar em algum lugar ("she walked into the room") e from marca a origem. Depois de arrive, use in para cidade e país e at para o resto: "arrive in London", "arrive at the hotel" — nunca "arrive to".
Muitos verbos e adjetivos pedem uma preposição fixa, que não segue a do português: depend on (depender de), interested in (interessado em), good at (bom em), married to (casado com), listen to (ouvir). Essas combinações se aprendem em bloco, como uma palavra só.
